“Leading excellence and diversity in museum, library and archive activity to inspire and sustain social, cultural and economic life in the South East.”
MLA South East is the strategic development agency for museums, libraries and archives in the region. We are part of the wider MLA Partnership with the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) and the eight other regional agencies.
Together we work to improve people's lives by building knowledge, supporting learning, inspiring creativity and celebrating identity. The Partnership acts collectively for the benefit of the sector and the public, leading the transformation of museums, libraries and archives for the future. We receive core funding from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.
MLA South East supports the largest number of museums, libraries and archives in any English region. The South East region encompasses the historic counties of Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, East and West Sussex, Surrey and Kent.
Currently, we receive core funding from MLA. This funding will cease in April 2009, by which time MLA South East and the other eight regional agencies will have been wound up and a single national MLA will have replaced the MLA Partnership.

SEMLAC
In April 2006 the South East Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (SEMLAC) changed its name to MLA South East to join forces with the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) and the eight other independent regional agencies to create ‘The MLA Partnership’. Our website will, therefore, contain references to SEMLAC publications and projects which pre-date the creation of the Partnership but which are still relevant to our current work.
