Schools4Museums

Schools4Museums is a web resource developed as part of the South East Schools Database Project by Renaissance South East to improve our understanding of schools’ use of museums services in the region.

It is designed to help individual museums by giving them password protected access to recent information about which schools within their catchment area are using museums in the South East. This makes it easier for museums to plan their marketing to schools and produce more targeted communications.

A similar resource is now being developed nationally by MLA. However, Schools4Museums will continue to be available to museums in the South East via this website until development work on the national database is completed. Both sites are supported by the Strategic Commissioning Education Programme.

Schools Participation Reports
The data is also used to identify issues such as gaps in provision and non-participation by particular types of school, which need to be addressed across the region. Reports describing the key findings of Phase One and Phase Two of this research are available below (2002-04 and 2004-06).

The summary report for Phase Two (2004-06) confirms that 74% of the South East’s Primary and Secondary schools took part in some form of museum-related learning between 2004 and 2006, a total of 2,400 state schools. Levels of participation vary considerably across the region, with the highest levels of Primary school participation involving the Isle of Wight, Brighton and Hove, Oxfordshire, Medway and Hampshire.

The Phase Three report covering the 2006-07 academic year will be available shortly. In the meantime, we hope that museums will take advantage of the free online bookings system, continue entering their data electronically and use Schools4Museums to support their planning and marketing. Select 'continue' to find further details about the online data entry system and the booking system.
