Terminology
The full and correct phrase is “the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.” A few abbreviations seem to be acceptable once the full phrase has been correctly stated as above, and these are: “London 2012”, “the 2012 Games” or “the Games”. Bear in mind that short-hand references to “the Olympics” blatantly exclude the Paralympics – a critical part of the Games, of our bid for the Games, and for our region’s profile (with Stoke Mandeville acknowledged as the birthplace of the Paralympic Games.)
But it is a good idea never solely to trust the guidance provided by any source other than the London 2012 website itself. See for example http://222.london2012.com. This includes information about the Games themselves, the organisations delivering the Games, about branding, funding and more.
Olympism and Culture
Pierre de Coubertin is considered the founder of the modern Olympic movement. His philosophy, which is followed to this day, mirror the classical Greeks in maintaining that the purpose of the Olympic Games was to celebrate mind, body and spirit. The vision for London’s bid is that sport, culture and education will come together for an enormous celebration.
The Cultural Olympiad
The Cultural Olympiad, which commences in 2008 when Beijing hands over to London, is a four year cultural and educational programme to build community involvement in the Games right across the UK.
Sports Events Venues in the South East
The South East will host two events: Rowing and Flatwater Canoe/Kayak. These events will be held at the boating Lake at Dorney, Eton.
