  • 23 August is the UNESCO International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. Events are being held to commemorate this event across the country and the department for culture, media and sport (DCMS) have produced an events guide.

  • Sync is interested in the interplay between leadership and disability; it aims to energise, inform and ultimately change disabled and Deaf people’s relationship with leadership, by offering information and support, encouraging dialogue and designing leadership interventions.

  • New guidance on CRB checks for volunteers

  • The Cabinet Office have published guidance to help organisations that use volunteers to be clear about when they do and don’t need to carry out Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks on volunteers. The guidance will help cut unnecessary red tape and responds to concerns voiced by the voluntary sector that potential volunteers can be put off if they are asked to undergo a CRB check without good reason.

  • Communities Minister Baroness Andrews confirmed nearly £500m for neighbourhood partnerships in deprived communities across the country, to continue helping their work to cut crime levels, improve educational achievements and boost job opportunities.

  • Nominations are now being sought for the Jodi Awards 2008. The awards are for museums, libraries, archives and heritage venues that use technology to provide access to collections and learning for disabled people, e.g. websites, interactive objects, audio-guides, PDAs and virtual reality shows.
